Classic Applesauce

Recipe #334626 | 25 min | 5 min prep | add private note

Making a simple, chunky applesauce, this recipe comes from the 2005 cookbook, Get Saucy. I prefer using either Mcintosh or Pippin apples for this sauce, & making a double batch allows for freezing some for later!

SERVES 4 , 2 cups (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
In a medium-size, heavy saucepan, combine apples, sugar & water & bring to a boil.
  2. 2
Cover & simmer over medium-low heat until the apples are tender & broken down, about 15 minutes, stirring once or twice.
  3. 3
Raise the heat to medium-high & cook, uncovered, until liquid is slightly reduced, about 5 minutes longer, then stir in lemon juice.
  4. 4
For a smooth sauce, stir frequently or puree in a food processor.
  5. 5
    Serve warm or cold.
  6. 6
Will keep, tightly covered, in the refrigerator for up to 1 month, or in the freezer for 2 months.

I used the rest of my apples from the summer yield from the orchards and made this delicious applesauce to go with "Saturday Lunch at the Farm" yesterday. Instead of the water, I used some left over apple cider and let her cook away. The aroma was enough to bring you to your knees. Towards the end of the cooking time, I added 1/4 tsp. of vanilla and stirred in and finished the cooking time from there. Glorious Syd! Thanks for posting!

Very quick and easy applesauce recipe. I used apple juice in place of the water and added a little cinnamon. I have never tried freezing applesauce, but am going to freeze some of this batch to save for Christmas dinner. Thanks for another great recipe, Mike. Made for December, 2008 Aussie/NZ Swap.

Delicious apple sauce. I used Gala apples and cooked them with a cinnamon stick. The apples were sweet so I used a little less sugar. Made for Newest Zaar Tag.

I had a bag of MacIntosh apples that a local grower had given me, and I needed to use them up so I tried this recipe. It was easy to make and the applesauce turned out to be delicious. I added a little cinnamon to mine, and cooked the apples with the skin on, then ran the mixture through my Foley Food Mill to remove skins, so my applesauce was a nice pink colour. I love this recipe, thanks for posting! made for Aussie Swap
